My tour with 1st Radio started when Bob Brewington sponsored me, my wife
and two kids in 1963. It wasn't too long after that when I made it to
Sub-Unit 1 in Phu Bai. I got there just after they made the move from
Pleiku.
After that short tour, a few of us were lucky enough to go to Australia
to work with the Aussies. Great guys and great beer. (They drink it cold
like we do - not warm like the Brits.)
Got second TAD tour with the Sub Unit after it had moved to Danang in
the dried-up rice paddies outside of Dogpatch. Wound up being PCSd there
for the 13-month tour. Quite interesting. Helped in the move over the
III MAF Hqs. by Marble Mountain and worked with the guys down in Chu
Lai. We're the ones that helped kick off Operation STARLIGHT.
Got transferred to Co. "A", MARSPTBN at Ft. Meade for 3.5 years. They
liked me there and extended my tour for six months.
Then came three years in the best fishing hole in the world - Guantanamo
Bay Cuba. It was the re-forming of Co. "L" when they shut down Phu Bai.
I was the fourth Marine to help take over the NSGA there.
I retired from Gitmo and hired on with Litton Data Systems in Pascagoula
MS. They needed someone who could help with the installation of SUPPRAD
spaces on LHA and LHD Class ships.
Finally got my degree in Computer Science while working for them and
took a two-year flyer with the Rocketdyne Corporation working with the
R&D folks who were testing and delivering the first of the main engines
for the Space Shuttle.
Too many ulcers and nervous breakdowns for me, so I went back to Data
Systems after we delivered the first three engines to NASA. That took 3
years on the calendar but ten years off my longevity.
